History

Maplewood started out as a rural farming area in the 1800s. The name “Maplewood” comes from the numerous maple trees that grow in the area. In 1957, the village of Maplewood was incorporated as a city. Growth accelerated in the 1950s and 1960s with the construction of Highway 61 and Interstate 694 through Maplewood. The population grew from 3,075 in 1960 to 19,501 in 1970 as suburbia spread and more housing was constructed. Through the late 20th century and into the 21st century, Maplewood has continued to grow and thrive as a suburban community of St. Paul.
