With a population of over 41,000 as of the 2020 census, Mankato is a mid-sized city located along the Minnesota River in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Mankato lies about 85 miles southwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul along U.S. Highways 14 and 169. Mankato is the larger of the two principal cities of the Mankato-North Mankato metropolitan area, which has a combined population of over 96,000.

History

The area was long settled by various indigenous peoples, but the first European settlers arrived in 1852. Mankato was incorporated as a city in 1858 and designated the county seat of Blue Earth County. It was named after Mankato, a chief of the Dakota tribe.

Mankato experienced rapid growth with the arrival of railroads in the 1860s. It served as a hub for shipping agricultural products from the region. The city was the site of the 1862 Dakota War trials which resulted in the hanging of 38 Dakota men, the largest mass execution in US history. This dark event scarred relations between European settlers and Native Americans.

Mankato continued to grow into the 20th century as a regional economic center. Several universities were established in the city. Like many Midwest cities, Mankato's economy suffered declines in the 1980s but has since rebounded.
