With a population of 86,325 as of 2021, Duluth is the fourth largest city in Minnesota. Located at the westernmost point of Lake Superior, Duluth has long been an important Great Lakes port and transportation hub. The city has a rich history and many attractions for visitors to enjoy.

History of Duluth

The area around Duluth was long inhabited by Native American tribes including the Ojibwe and Dakota Sioux. French fur traders visited the area in the 17th and 18th centuries. Permanent European settlement began in the 1850s and accelerated with rumors of copper deposits in the surrounding Arrowhead Region. Duluth was officially incorporated as a town in 1857 and as a city in 1870. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Duluth grew rapidly into one of the country's major shipping ports and industrial centers. Iron ore, timber, and grain shipped over the Great Lakes through the Duluth harbor fueled the city's early boom years. For more on Duluth's origins, see the History of Duluth page on Wikipedia.
