History of Duluth

The area around Duluth was long inhabited by Native American tribes including the Ojibwe and Dakota Sioux. French fur traders visited the area in the 17th and 18th centuries. Permanent European settlement began in the 1850s and accelerated with rumors of copper deposits in the surrounding Arrowhead Region. Duluth was officially incorporated as a town in 1857 and as a city in 1870. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Duluth grew rapidly into one of the country's major shipping ports and industrial centers. Attractions and Landmarks

Aerial Lift Bridge

One of Duluth's most recognizable landmarks is the Aerial Lift Bridge. This vertical lift bridge spans the Duluth Ship Canal and connects Canal Park with the rest of the city. The bridge was completed in 1905 and raises its central span to allow ships to pass beneath. The lift bridge has become an iconic symbol of Duluth.

Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center

Located next to Canal Park, the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center offers exhibits on Great Lakes shipping, shipwrecks, and Duluth's maritime history. The center features ship models, artifacts, films, and more.

Glensheen Mansion

Glensheen is a 39-room Jacobean-style mansion located on the shore of Lake Superior. The historic house was built between 1905-1908 by wealthy businessman Chester Adgate Congdon. Glensheen is open for guided tours and hosts cultural events throughout the year.

Great Lakes Aquarium

The Great Lakes Aquarium focuses on animals and habitats native to the Great Lakes region. Exhibits include a walk-through stainless steel shark tunnel, otters, birds, reptiles, and more. The aquarium also offers educational programs and events.

Duluth has over 160 parks as well as access to hiking, biking, skiing, and more in the surrounding Arrowhead region. Popular parks and recreation areas include:

Duluth International Airport (DLH) offers nonstop flights to major hubs as well as service from low-cost carriers. Due to its harbor location, Duluth continues to serve as a major freight transportation center. The BNSF railway has an intermodal terminal and several docks handle bulk cargo. Sports Teams

Duluth is home to the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs college athletic teams. The Bulldogs compete in NCAA Division II as part of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Popular teams include men's and women's ice hockey, football, and women's basketball.
