With a population of 61,335 as of the 2020 census, Burnsville is the tenth largest city in Minnesota. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area and located just 15 miles south of downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. Once a rural farming town, Burnsville has transformed into a thriving suburb. History

The land where Burnsville now sits was originally inhabited by the Dakota people. In the 1830s, settlers of European descent began to arrive in the area. One of the first permanent settlers was William Byrne, who built a cabin near Black Dog Lake in 1837. The city was named after Byrne and officially incorporated as a village in 1964. It became a statutory city in 1979.
