Apple Valley is a city located in Dakota County in the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minnesota, United States. As of the 2020 census, Apple Valley had a population of 54,584 residents, making it the 19th largest city in Minnesota. The city was named after the St. Paul and Sioux City Railroad president's wife, Jane Appleby.

History

Apple Valley has an interesting history dating back to the early 19th century. The first known settlers arrived in 1856 and began farming the fertile land. In the 1860s, the St. Paul and Sioux City Railroad was built, connecting Apple Valley to the larger region. The town soon became a hub for the local farming community. In 1908, the village of Lebanon was founded near Apple Valley.

The present-day City of Apple Valley was incorporated in 1969. Through the 1960s and 70s, the new city grew rapidly as a suburb of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Many new subdivisions, schools, parks and city amenities were built. Today, Apple Valley retains some of its rural roots but offers all the conveniences of a modern suburban community.
