As of the 2010 census, Waterford had a population of 71,707 making it one of the largest municipalities in Oakland County. Waterford is part of the Metro Detroit region. The racial makeup of the population is 90.35% White, 4.86% African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.92% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races.

History

The area now known as Waterford was first surveyed in 1818. It started out as a 4 mile tract of land bordered by Clinton River, Cass Lake, and Lake Oakland. In 1818, New York native Justus Smith purchased the land for $1.25 per acre. The area was mostly used for agriculture until the 20th century when the population boom led to Waterford becoming a village in 1936 and a township in 1953. Today, it is a home rule city.
