History

The area where Sterling Heights now stands was originally home to the Potawatomi and Chippewa tribes. The first European settlers arrived in the early 19th century and the city incorporated as Sterling Township in 1835. Significant development took place in the 1950s and 1960s as the automobile industry boomed in Detroit, transforming Sterling Heights from a rural township into a commuter suburb. It officially became a city in 1968.
