History

The area that is now Rochester Hills was originally home to the Potawatomi Native American tribe. European settlers began arriving in the early 19th century. The city was first settled by immigrants from New York and Pennsylvania who were attracted to the area for its natural resources and fertile farmland. Rochester Hills began as an agricultural area, with wheat and fruit orchards being early major crops.

In 1817, local landowner Graham was granted a post office named Avon, becoming the first post office in Oakland County. The nearby town of Rochester was founded in 1817 and Avon was renamed Rochester in 1833 after moving its post office. Rochester was incorporated as a village inside Avon Township in 1869.

The area grew steadily as a farming community in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The population boomed following World War II as Detroit's auto industry expanded and urban residents moved to the suburbs. Avon Township adopted a charter in 1978 and became Avon Charter Township. Rochester Hills was incorporated as a city from parts of Rochester and Avon Township in 1984.
