Redford is a charter township located in western Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 48,362 at the 2020 census, making it the 30th largest municipality in Michigan. Redford is currently Michigan's 17th largest township and the 10th largest municipality in Wayne County. Redford is best known as the home of the Redford Theatre.

According to the Wikipedia page for Redford Township, the population was 48,362 at the 2020 census. This is down from the peak of 53,624 in 2000. Redford experienced its largest growth between 1950 and 1970 when the population nearly tripled from 10,496 to 29,655. The racial makeup of the township was 77.5% White, 17.6% African American, 0.5% Native American, 1.9% Asian, 0.8% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races.

History

Redford was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes and was considered part of Ribtown in the early 1800s. The area now known as Redford Township was first surveyed in 1817. The first permanent settlement was established in 1825 and the township was formed in 1827. It was named after John Redford, the first settler to break ground. Redford adopted a charter and incorporated as a village in 1869. The village became a charter township in 1926 shortly after the death of Henry Ford who lived there at the time.

Economy

Redford has historically had a strong manufacturing-based economy, concentrated in the eastern half of the township. Major employers in Redford have included Ford Motor Company, Visteon Automotive Systems, Lear Corporation, AAA Michigan, and Art Van Furniture among others. However, many large employers have either left the township or significantly downsized operations in the past few decades. Today the economy is more diversified with healthcare, retail, education, and service industries making up a large component.

Redford Theatre

The Redford Theatre is a fully restored, historic neighborhood theater located downtown at 17360 Lahser Rd, Detroit, MI 48219. It was built in 1928 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The Redford Theatre shows classic films, hosts live productions, and is an event space. It is one of the few remaining neighborhood theaters from the early 20th century and is an iconic landmark in Redford.

St. Robert Bellarmine

St. Robert Bellarmine Church is a prominent Roman Catholic church located downtown at 28200 W Chicago Rd, Redford, MI 48239. The church was built in 1941 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It is an impressive structure and iconic Catholic church known for its beautiful architecture and ornate interior.

Hines Park

Hines Park is a large 4.9 mile long park that runs through the western portion of Redford along the Rouge River. It offers paved trails, river access, picnic areas and sporting facilities. It is part of the larger Wayne County Park system. A notable location is Nankin Mills located at 33175 Ann Arbor Trail.

Public Library

The Redford Township District Library serves the community of Redford with locations at 25320 West Six Mile Rd and 10100 Grand River Ave. The library has a collection of over 250,000 books, audiobooks, and DVDs. It offers programs for all ages including storytimes, book clubs, and computer classes.

Redford Museum

The Redford Historical Museum collects and preserves artifacts and archives related to the history of Redford Township. It is located at 15055 Inkster Rd, Redford Charter Township, MI 48239.
