History of Pontiac

Pontiac was founded in 1818 by Solomon Sibley and Stephen Mack. Sibley commissioned the platting of Pontiac in 1819. The city was named after the Native American leader Chief Pontiac, who led an uprising against British military occupation in the 18th century. The Pontiac Company helped establish Pontiac by recruiting settlers from New York and New England.

By the early 20th century, Pontiac was home to carriage manufacturing, mills, breweries and other industries attracted by the power generated by the Clinton River. The first automotive factory in Pontiac was opened in 1907 by the Oakland Motor Car Company.

General Motors purchased the Oakland Motor Co. in 1909, prompting an influx of GM automotive manufacturing. The Pontiac brand automobiles were named after the city. Pontiac grew rapidly in population and economic prosperity in the following decades. Like many cities in the region, the decline of the auto industry in the 1970s and 1980s led to economic struggles.

Today, Pontiac is working to revitalize its downtown and encourage new investment and development. The city still draws on its manufacturing roots while also branching out into healthcare, technology and services.
