With a population of 32,418 as of the 2020 census, Jackson is the 36th largest city in Michigan. Located along Interstate 94 in Jackson County, it is the county seat and a major industrial, commercial, and cultural hub of the area. History

The city of Jackson was founded in 1829 and named after President Andrew Jackson. It quickly became a central location due to its position along several stagecoach routes. Jackson was incorporated as a village in 1838 and as a city in 1857.

Jackson has a total area of 11.06 square miles, of which 10.89 square miles is land and 0.18 square miles is water. It has a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers.

As of the 2020 census, Jackson had a population of 32,418 people living in 13, Clarke's 254 households. The racial makeup of the city was 73.4% White, 20.2% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 1.9% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race made up 4.9% of the population.

Transportation

The main highways serving Jackson are Interstate 94 and U.S. Route 127. The city does not currently have passenger rail service, but plans are underway to connect Jackson to Ann Arbor via commuter rail.

Public transportation is provided by the Jackson Transit Authority which operates buses throughout the city.

Jackson is served by the Reynolds Field Airport for regional commercial and private air travel. The nearest international airport is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, about 75 miles east of Jackson.

Jackson is home to the minor league baseball team, the Jackson Generals, who play at The Ballpark at Jackson. The city also has a USPHL junior ice hockey team, the Jackson Prowlers.
