History of Independence

The earliest settlers to the area that would become Independence were Ralph Wadhams and his family, who came from New York in 1833. More settlers arrived throughout the 1830s and 1840s to farm the fertile land. The community was originally called Pontiac Center due to its proximity to the nearby city of Pontiac. However, when it was incorporated as a village in 1842, the name was changed to Independence to reflect the independent spirit of its citizens. Learn more about the history of Independence.
