Farmington Hills is a city located in southeast Michigan in Oakland County. History of Farmington Hills

Farmington Hills has a history dating back to the 19th century when it was still mainly farmland and wilderness. In 1825, Arthur Power purchased land in what is now Farmington Hills and built a grist mill. The area became known as Powers Mill. In 1836, the first post office opened with the name Farmington Centre. The name was changed to Farmington in 1850.

In the early 20th century, auto pioneer Henry Ford purchased land in Farmington which attracted other business interests to the area. After World War II, there was increased development and suburbanization turning Farmington into a bedroom community for Detroit. Farmington and Farmington Township grew significantly in population during this time. In 1959, Farmington Township was split with the southern portion incorporated as the City of Farmington and the northern portion remaining the Township of Farmington.

The township continued to expand throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The name Farmington Hills was adopted in 1973. In the early 21st century, Farmington Hills continued to grow bringing in new housing and economic development. Today, Farmington Hills is a thriving and diverse suburban city that is home to over 80,000 residents.

As mentioned previously, Farmington Hills has a population of 81,561 residents as of the 2020 census. This makes it the 11th largest city in Michigan. The population density is approximately 2,200 people per square mile. Farmington Hills saw its largest population growth between 1970 and 1980 when the population nearly doubled from around 36,000 to over 69,600. Growth slowed after that but has remained steady over the past few decades.

Farmington Hills has a racial makeup of about 66% White, 22% Asian, 7% Black, 3% Hispanic/Latino and 2% two or more races according to census data. The median age is 40.5 years old. Around 91% of residents have a high school diploma and over half have a bachelor's degree or higher. The median household income is around $75,000.
