Once home to the Ojibwe, Potawatomi and Ottawa tribes, Dearborn Heights has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. History

The area that is now Dearborn Heights was originally home to the native Ojibwe, Potawatomi and Ottawa tribes. In the early 19th century, European settlers began moving to the area. Land was purchased from the native tribes in 1817 and the Township of Dearborn was incorporated in 1827. Early industry focused on agriculture, orchards and quarrying.

In the 1920s, the Ford Motor Company opened automobile plants in nearby Dearborn and Detroit, drawing thousands of new residents to the area. Orchards were replaced with subdivisions and housing. According to the 2020 census, Dearborn Heights has a population of 55,651 residents, making it the 16th largest city in Michigan. Dearborn Heights saw its peak population in 1970, when over 66,000 people called the city home. Since then, the population has declined slightly each decade.
