Commerce was first settled in 1826. The Village of Duck Lake was established in 1833. Commerce is located at 42°35′16′′N 83°28′10′′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.60 square miles (4.14 km2), of which 1.56 square miles (4.04 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.

Commerce is located in southeastern Oakland County, approximately 20 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. It is bordered by the city of Walled Lake and Wixom to the east, West Bloomfield Township to the north, Wolverine Lake to the west, and Wixom to the south.
