History

Chesterfield was first settled in the early 19th century and was originally part of New Baltimore Township. In 1834, local residents voted to form their own township which they named Chesterfield. The name Chesterfield came from the town of Chesterfield, New Hampshire where some of the early settlers had migrated from. Chesterfield Township was formally organized in 1839.

In the late 1940s, residents of the southern part of Chesterfield Township voted to incorporate into a village called East Chesterfield. Then in 1989, East Chesterfield residents voted to become a city and adopted the name Chesterfield. The city has continued to grow over the past few decades through both new development and annexation of land from the surrounding township.
