History

Bloomfield was first settled in the 1820s. Many of the early settlers came from New York and New England. Some of the first industries included a sawmill, gristmill, ashery, and chair factory along the Rouge River. The village was named after Bloomfield Hills, New Jersey, where some of the settlers were originally from. Bloomfield was incorporated as a village in 1827 and then as a city in 1964.
