With a population of over 50,000 residents, Battle Creek is a vibrant city in Calhoun County, Michigan. Though perhaps best known as the original headquarters of Kellogg's cereal company, Battle Creek has a rich history and many attractions and opportunities to offer residents and visitors alike.

History

Battle Creek was first settled in 1831 and was incorporated as a city in 1859. The city got its name from a skirmish between a federal government land survey party led by Colonel John Mullett and two Native Americans, likely Potawatomi people, over stolen cookware and utensils. During the fight, Mullett was convinced he heard the Potawatomi call reinforcements - thus the name "Battle Creek."

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Battle Creek gained fame as the site of many health and wellness sanitariums. By 1902, Battle Creek was home to over two dozen sanitariums, earning the nickname "The Sanitarium City." The most famous was the Battle Creek Sanitarium run by John Harvey Kellogg. In addition to developing health foods like granola and peanut butter, Kellogg also started the Kellogg's cereal company during this period. Kellogg's went on to become Battle Creek's largest employer for much of the 20th century before relocating its headquarters in the 1980s.
