Wheaton is a census-designated place and unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It is located north of Washington, D.C. Wheaton takes its name from Frank Wheaton, a career officer in the United States Army and volunteer from Rhode Island in the First Battle of Bull Run, late of the Union Army. His estates in the nearby Montgomery County and Washington, D.C., suburbs bear his name.

Population

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Wheaton had a population of 48,284 residents. Wheaton is the third most populous unincorporated area in Maryland after Bethesda and Columbia.

History

The area was home to a number of properties and estates of prominent businessmen and farmers in the years before the Civil War. Construction of a railroad in the area, plus the 1898 founding of a streetcar system to Washington, D.C., led to growth and development. By World War II, the population of Wheaton had reached 1,000 residents.

After World War II, Wheaton experienced rapid suburbanization as part of the postwar Baby Boom. Between 1950 and 1954, 15,000 new homes were built in the area and developers bought up land and built many mid-rise and high-rise apartment buildings. By 1960, the population of Wheaton rose to 52,000 inhabitants, larger than the populations of Gaithersburg and Rockville combined. The area was particularly beloved by government workers due to its affordable housing and proximity to government institutions in downtown Washington, D.C. City planners designed the downtown areas of Wheaton and neighboring Silver Spring with the hope that the areas would compete with the new downtown Bethesda as central business hubs.
