History

Waldorf was initially known as Beantown after the Hotel Beantown which was built in 1908 on the current site of the VFW building on US Route 301. The town's name was later changed to Waldorf in honor of William Waldorf Astor, who was building a luxurious Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City at the time. The original settlers were mostly tobacco farmers. The population grew slowly over the first half of the 20th century.

Things started changing rapidly in Waldorf in the 1950s and 1960s. The construction of US Route 301 through the area brought new development. Waldorf saw another huge population boom starting in the 1980s as the area around Washington DC expanded. Many new housing developments and shopping centers were built, transforming Waldorf from a rural farming community into a large suburban center. Today it remains one of the fastest growing areas in Maryland.
