Silver Spring is a census-designated place in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It had a population of 76,716 as of the 2010 census, making it the fourth most populous place in Maryland, after Baltimore, Columbia, and Germantown.

History

Silver Spring has an interesting history dating back to the 1700s. The area was first settled in the 1720s by Francis Preston Blair who named his 600-acre property "Silver Spring" after a local spring.[1] In 1840, Blair's son, Francis Preston Blair, Jr., inherited the property and built the Silver Spring House hotel at the intersection of present-day Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road. The hotel served as the center of local activity for decades.[1] The arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1873 fueled Silver Spring's development as a commuter suburb of Washington, D.C. The town remained largely agricultural until the 1920s when it started transitioning to a residential suburb. Its population exploded after World War II with the construction of many subdivisions for government workers and their families.[1] Today, Silver Spring continues to thrive as a major suburban hub outside of Washington, D.C. It contains a large central business district with highrise buildings, shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

Population

As of the 2010 Census, Silver Spring had a population of 76,716 residents, making it the second most populous census-designated place in Maryland after Columbia.[2] Silver Spring saw its most significant population growth between 1950 and 1970 when the population skyrocketed from 19,000 to 66,900 residents. The population growth leveled out over the next few decades but has continued to climb at a slower rate. The racial makeup of Silver Spring is quite diverse. As of 2010, the racial composition was 45.7% White, 27.8% African American, 0.5% Native American, 10.6% Asian, 11.9% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 24.4% of the population.[2] Over 39% of Silver Spring residents were born outside of the United States as of 2013. This contributes greatly to the area's racial, cultural, and language diversity.[2]
