The area now known as Severna Park was originally inhabited by the Piscataway tribe. Early European settlers established tobacco farms in the area in the 17th century. By the 19th century, the town had become known as Severn Park and served as a steamboat landing on the Severn River. The town was formally incorporated in 1923.
