Severn is an unincorporated community located in Anne Arundel County in the U.S. state of Maryland. According to the 2020 census, the population of Severn was 44,639. Severn is part of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area and is located approximately 15 miles south of downtown Baltimore and 32 miles northeast of Washington, D.C.

History

Severn was originally inhabited by the Piscataway Native Americans. European settlers began arriving in the area in the 17th century. By the 19th century, Severn was the location of timber farms that supplied wood for shipbuilding in Baltimore. The community was named after the Severn River, which flows through the area.

During World War II, the Fort George G. Meade military base was established near Severn. This spurred residential and commercial development in the community. Severn continued to grow in population over the late 20th and early 21st centuries as a suburb of Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

As of the 2020 census, Severn had a population of 44,639. Severn has seen steady population growth since the 1970s. It has a mixture of single-family homes, townhomes, and apartments that provide housing for the community.

The racial makeup of Severn is 52.1% White, 35.7% African American, 5.6% Asian, 3.9% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race make up 7.5% of the population.

Severn has a median household income of $76,425, which is above the state average. 13.8% percent of the population lives below the poverty line.

Severn Library

The Severn Library branch is part of the Anne Arundel County Public Library system. It offers books, media, computer access, children's programs, and community meeting spaces for residents. The 15,000 square foot building originally opened in 1978.

Downs Memorial Park

Downs Memorial Park is a 266-acre park located off of MD Route 176. It contains playgrounds, hiking and biking trails through wooded areas, picnic pavilions, a dog park, athletic fields, and access to the Severn River. The park provides recreational opportunities for Severn residents and visitors.
