History of Rockville

Rockville dates back to the early 18th century when the land was part of a 2,000 acre tract belonging to Daniel Dulany. In 1776, Dulany founded a small settlement known as Montgomery Court House which would eventually become Rockville.

By 1801, the village contained around 20 dwellings including the Montgomery County Courthouse. Growth continued into the 19th century with the opening of the Rockville Academy in 1803 and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad reaching the town in 1849.

Rockville was officially incorporated in 1860. The coming of the railroad helped transform Rockville from a small rural town into a busy commercial center over the following decades. By 1904, Rockville's population exceeded 1,000 residents.

In the 20th century, Rockville emerged as one of Maryland's most prominent suburbs. Its population ballooned from around 6,000 in the 1950s to over 44,000 by 1990. Modern day Rockville is a major business and employment hub that maintains a small-town historic charm.
