Potomac is a census-designated place in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 49,827. Potomac is situated along the Potomac River, northwest of Washington, D.C. It is renowned for its natural beauty, affluence, and high-performing public schools.

History

The area of present-day Potomac was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Piscataway and the Nacotchtank. European settlement began in the 17th century with English fur traders. By the 18th century, large tobacco plantations dominated the landscape. Following the Revolutionary War, the area became part of the new District of Columbia. However, residents in the western parts of the district, including Potomac, successfully lobbied for retrocession back to Virginia in 1846.

Potomac was the site of several Civil War battles and skirmishes. The town was severely impacted by the war, but began to recover and grow again in the late 19th century. With the arrival of streetcars, Potomac gradually transformed into a bedroom community for Washington, D.C. The construction of the Capital Beltway accelerated suburban residential and commercial development after World War II.
