Olney is a census-designated place and unincorporated area located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2020 census, Olney had a population of 34,615 residents, making it one of the most populous unincorporated communities in Maryland.

History of Olney

Olney was founded in 1792 and named for the postmaster at the time, Revolutionary War officer Captain Jeremiah Olney. It was established along the Brookeville Turnpike connecting Washington, D.C. to the north. During the Civil War, Olney served as a refuge for those fleeing the Battle of Antietam.

Historic sites in Olney include the Olney Theatre Center, the Oakley Cabin, and the Dr. William Perry House. The theatre was founded in 1938 and has hosted many famous actors over the decades. Oakley Cabin was originally built in 1832 by a freed slave named Samuel Oakley on land he purchased after emancipation.
