History of Odenton

Odenton was founded in 1858 when the Annapolis and Elk Ridge Railroad built a rail line through the area. It was named after Oden Bowie, president of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad and Maryland Governor from 1869 to 1872. The town originally developed around the railroad and became the site of Fort George G. Meade, which continues to be an economic engine for the area.
