History

The area that is now North Bethesda was originally part of a 1,800 acre land grant called Middleton’s Tavern. In the late 1800s, development began in the area with the construction of the Rockville Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, which brought wealthy Washingtonians looking for summer homes. Subdivisions such as Edgemoor and Battery Park were built in the early 1900s.

After World War II, there was further suburban residential and commercial development in North Bethesda, spurred by the opening of the Capital Beltway. High-rise office buildings and apartments transformed Rockville Pike into an "edge city" area in the 1980s. The name "North Bethesda" started to be used for the area to distinguish it from the City of Bethesda.
