Hagerstown was founded in 1762 by German immigrant Jonathan Hager. Hager purchased 200 acres of land called Hager's Fancy and laid out streets and lots for the construction of houses. The town was incorporated in 1813 with Hager serving as the first mayor. It was an important hub on the National Road connecting Baltimore to St. Louis. The arrival of the railroads in the 19th century further spurred Hagerstown's growth as a regional transportation center and manufacturing hub.
