History

The early settlement of Glen Burnie began in 1812 with the construction of a grist mill on Marley Creek by John Hammond. Prior to its development in the late 19th century, Glen Burnie's farms provided agricultural produce to Baltimore. The Baltimore and Potomac Railroad arrived in 1872, allowing easy access to Baltimore markets. A passenger station was built in 1891 at Crain Highway and Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard and this spurred development of the surrounding community. Early 20th century houses and buildings reflect the prosperity of the times.

Glen Burnie's name originates from two intrepid real estate developers, William W. Lanahan and Henry S. Manly, who in 1856 purchased the rural property surrounding Druid Hill, a log cabin built by early settlers, and began selling building lots and acreage to local farmers. The Union Mining Company opened a rutile (titanium oxide) mine near present day Higland Beach in 1863. China clay mining operations followed. In 1868 what became Maryland's first suburban development was begun by the Glen Burnie Improvement Association on land owned by Thomas Walker. Wealthy Baltimoreans and Washingtonians seeking relief from summer heat found relaxation and recreation at the Old Bay hotel and the Maryland Yacht Club, where notorious heavyweight boxer John L. Sullivan fought one of his bouts.

During World War I and World War II, the community supported war bond drives, liberty loan campaigns, the draft, and victory gardens. As the area's population grew, local churches and a school were founded. Affordable automobiles and the electric railroad accelerated suburbanization. After 1945 returning servicemen pursuing the American dream resulted in new housing and schools responding to a Baby Boom childhood. Between 1950 and 1980, Glen Burnie transformed from a village consisting largely of farms and estates to a sprawling suburban community in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. New townhome communities, shopping centers, movie theaters, churches, public parks, ballfields, nature trails, and commercial districts were built during this phase of development.

Today Glen Burnie is home to many restaurants, retail stores and offices. Local landmarks include Glen Burnie High School, the courthouse, town center, public library, and several community parks. Many community events take place in Glen Burnie throughout the year like the annual Memorial Day parade, 4th of July spectacular, and holiday tree lighting.
