Frederick is a city in, and the county seat of, Frederick County, located in the northern part of the U.S. state of Maryland. With a population of 78,150 as of the 2022 US Census estimate, Frederick is the second largest incorporated city in Maryland, behind Baltimore.

History

Frederick was founded in 1745 by German-American settler Joseph Brunner. He named the area Frederick after Frederick Calvert, 6th Baron Baltimore, the family name of the proprietors of the Maryland colony from 1631 to 1771. Frederick was incorporated as a town in 1817 and became a city in 1818.

Frederick is located at 39°24′37′′N 77°24′43′′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.20 square miles (70.4 km2), of which, 26.97 square miles (69.9 km2) is land and 0.23 square miles (0.6 km2) is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 78,150 people and 30,103 households in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 61.3% White, 18.7% African American, 0.5% Native American, 5.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.7% from other races, and 4.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17.4% of the population.

The median income for a household in the city was $65,019. About 8.7% of families and 10.6% of the population were below the poverty line.
