Ellicott City is a historic unincorporated community located in Howard County, Maryland. Founded in 1772, it is one of the oldest towns in Maryland. According to 2019 census estimates, Ellicott City has a population of 66,984 residents.

History

Ellicott City was founded by the Ellicott brothers - Joseph, John, and Andrew - who chose the site due to its good wheat farming conditions and power from the Patapsco River. It was named after Andrew Ellicott, who helped survey the borders of the District of Columbia. By 1775, Ellicott's Mills (as it was originally known) was a large milling and manufacturing center. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad arrived in 1830, further expanding business and industry. Main Street in particular became a thriving commercial hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1952, flooding from the Patapsco River heavily damaged Main Street. Floods continued to plague Ellicott City, with especially devastating floods in 2011, 2016, and 2018. However, the community always rebuilt and continued to thrive as a historic destination and suburb of Baltimore.
