History of Dundalk

Dundalk's history dates back to the 17th century when it was inhabited by the Susquehannock Indians. The area was later included in grants of land given by King Charles I of England to Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, and became part of Baltimore County when established in 1659. In 1856, James Todd bought 530 acres of waterfront land and established the Todd Shipyard. The shipyard became known for building iron ships, particularly during World War I. The town of Dundalk was incorporated in 1902 and named after the town of Dundalk, Ireland. Dundalk continued to grow as a heavy industrial and shipping center through the 20th century.
