History

The area of land that is now Clinton was historically inhabited by the Piscataway tribe. European settlers began arriving in the 17th century. Tobacco farming fueled early settlement, and slave labor was relied upon heavily. Clinton was originally known as Surrattsville after Mary Surratt, who owned a tavern in the area where Abraham Lincoln's assassins plotted their attack. The town was renamed Clinton in the mid 20th century.

Surratt House
