Bethesda is a city in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, United States, located just northwest of Washington, D.C. With a population of 66,396 as of 2019, Bethesda is one of the largest communities in Maryland.

History

Bethesda was originally populated by the Piscataway and Nacotchtank Native American tribes. European settlers began arriving in the early 18th century and established tobacco farms in the area. By 1783, the community was known as Darcy's Store after William Darcy opened the first post office and general store in the settlement. The area was subsequently renamed Bethesda in 1871 after a local Presbyterian church.

Throughout the 19th century, Bethesda grew slowly as a rural farming community. However, its proximity to Washington, D.C. made it an attractive location for U.S. government facilities. Construction on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus began in the 1930s. Today, NIH and related institutions constitute the largest employer in Bethesda.

In the 1950s, Bethesda began to suburbanize rapidly. Its population quadrupled between 1950 and 1960 as city planners developed a central business district, parks, schools, libraries, and other infrastructure. The city has continued to expand and modernize in recent decades.
