History

The area now known as Aspen Hill was originally inhabited by the Piscataway Native American tribe. European settlers began arriving in the 18th century and tobacco farming became an important early industry. The name "Aspen Hill" comes from the aspen trees that once grew in the area.

In the late 19th century, Aspen Hill became home to several large estates including Halpine (owned by newspaper reporter Charles Halpine), Avondale (built by financier Jay Cooke), and Belward (built by Baltimore businessman Edward Baltzley). The advent of the railroad and streetcar lines beginning in the 1890s spurred Aspen Hill's suburban residential development.

By the mid-20th century, Aspen Hill evolved into one of the first major postwar suburbs in Montgomery County. Development rapidly accelerated in the 1950s as the Capital Beltway was built. Aspen Hill became an unincorporated area in 1954 after residents voted not to incorporate as a municipality.
