History

Annapolis was incorporated as a city in 1708. It served as the capital of Maryland and is still the capital today. The city was named after Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway, who later became Queen Anne of Great Britain. Maryland was established as an English colony in 1632 by George Calvert, with the original capital in St. Mary's City. The capital was moved to Annapolis in 1695 under Royal Governor Francis Nicholson.

As a port city, Annapolis played an important role in the colonial and revolutionary periods of the United States.
