During the Revolutionary War, Portland was burned in 1775 by the British Royal Navy. It was rebuilt and grew into a major seaport and gateway for trade and immigration. It became Maine's largest city by 1800. Portland prospered during the 19th century due to overseas trade, shipbuilding, rail transport, and manufacturing.
