History

Lewiston was first settled in 1770 and originally named Lewistown Plantation. It was incorporated as a town in 1795 and named after Lewiston Falls, which was discovered by explorers in 1609. The falls provided power for the city's early textile mills and industry. Lewiston developed rapidly starting in the early 1800s due to its location on the Androscoggin River and proximity to water power from the falls. By the mid-1800s, the town was a booming mill town and major manufacturing center. The population grew from around 1,600 in 1830 to over 16,000 by 1860 as immigrants arrived to work in the textile mills. Learn more about Lewiston's history at the Lewiston, Maine Wikipedia page.
