History of Richmond

Richmond was founded in 1798 by Colonel John Miller from Virginia, who built a cabin on land granted to him for his service during the Revolutionary War. By the early 1800s, Richmond emerged as an important hub for commerce and government in Kentucky. It served as the third capital of Kentucky in the early 19th century. During the Civil War, Richmond was the site of many skirmishes and battles, some of the bloodiest conflicts in Kentucky. The city was heavily damaged during the war. After the Civil War, Richmond recovered and rebuilt much of its infrastructure and economy. It continued to grow into a center of activity and commerce in eastern Kentucky.
