Covington is a city located in northern Kentucky, directly across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati. Covington had a population of 40,640 as of the 2010 U.S. Census, making it the fifth most populous city in Kentucky. Covington is the seat of Kenton County and is located within the Cincinnati–Northern Kentucky metropolitan area.

History

Covington was founded in 1815 by General Leonard Covington, a hero of the War of 1812. It was formally incorporated as a city in 1834. Early growth was due to its location on the Ohio River, making it an ideal stopover point between Louisville and Cincinnati. By the mid-19th century, Covington had become a major industrial city with an economy focused on ironworks, shipyards, distilleries, and meat packing plants. Like many riverfront cities, Covington suffered decline by the early 20th century as industry waned. But it has since rebounded as part of the Cincinnati metro area economy.
