History of Waipahu

Waipahu has a long history. The original name for the area was “Awawaloa” meaning “milk road” named for all the cows that once traveled the path to the dairies in the area. In 1897, Oahu Sugar Company opened a sugar mill in Waipahu. This led to its development as a town for plantation workers with people coming from many different countries to work at the mill. The sugar mill operated for nearly a century before closing in 1995. While sugarcane is no longer grown commercially in the area, Waipahu maintains its plantation era roots.
