Geography

History

The Hawaiian Islands were first settled between 500 and 600 A.D. by Polynesian explorers sailing canoes from other Pacific islands. The native Hawaiian culture flourished in isolation for over a thousand years until European contact. Captain James Cook was the first European to arrive in 1778. In the decades that followed, the native Hawaiian religion was abolished and the monarchy was overthrown. Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1898 and was admitted as the 50th state on August 21, 1959.
