History

Pearl City has a long history dating back to ancient Hawaii. The area was divided into several land divisions (ahupuaa) during the era of the Hawaiian monarchy, including the ahupuaʻa of Waiāhole, Waikāne, Waiawa, Mānana, and Mānana-Waiāhole. In 1887, Oahu Railway and Land Company developed the area into a sugar plantation town. It constructed homes and offices along a grid of streets centered around what is now Pearl City District Park. Pearl City became known for its sugar production and migrant work force. It later transitioned from an agricultural economy to become a residential suburb of Honolulu.
