History

Kaneohe has a long history dating back to ancient times. The area was once home to Native Hawaiian communities who lived off the land and sea. After western contact in the late 18th century, Kaneohe became an important agricultural area growing crops like rice, sugarcane and pineapple. In the 20th century, the construction of the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station and the Pali Highway connecting Honolulu to the windward side boosted the area's population and economy.

Kaneohe is located on the windward side of Oahu along Kaneohe Bay. It sits at the base of the majestic Ko'olau Mountains. Kaneohe covers approximately 20 square miles of land. The census-designated place of Kaneohe borders the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base to the south and the communities of Kailua to the north and Heeia to the west.

The racial makeup of Kaneohe is 42.8% Asian, 20.7% White, 8.9% Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, 1.7% Black or African American, 23.6% two or more races, and 2.3% some other race. The median age is 40.5 years old. The median household income is $91,915.
