With a population of around 45,000, Hilo is the largest city and county seat of Hawaii County on the Big Island of Hawaii. Known as the "crossroads of the Pacific," Hilo has a rich history and culture shaped by its scenic location between Mauna Loa volcano and Hilo Bay.

History of Hilo

Hilo was an important settlement for native Hawaiians long before the arrival of Europeans. Archaeological evidence indicates Polynesian settlers had established communities near Hilo Bay as early as the 11th century. The area was divided into agricultural plots managed by chiefs. Oral histories recount Hilo being a significant political and religious center in ancient Hawaii.

European explorers first arrived in the area in the late 18th century. American Protestant missionaries established one of the first Christian churches in Hawaii in Hilo in 1824. Sugar plantations drove Hilo's growth starting in the mid-19th century. The Hilo Railroad Company built a rail line connecting the town's sugar mills in 1881. Hilo became an incorporated city in 1904 and was officially designated the county seat of the newly created Hawaii County in 1905.

Hilo has endured several natural disasters throughout its history. Massive tsunamis generated by earthquakes across the Pacific damaged the city in 1946 and 1960. In 1984, Mauna Loa erupted and sent lava flows dangerously close to the outskirts of Hilo. The town continues to rebuild and prosper despite the threat of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis.
