East Honolulu is a region on the eastern side of the island of Oahu in Hawaii. With a population of 49,914 residents as of 2010, East Honolulu encompasses several neighborhoods including Hawaiʻi Kai, Kāhala, Niu Valley, and Maunalani Heights.

History

The area was originally inhabited by Native Hawaiians who lived in villages and sustsained themselves through fishing and farming. In the late 1800s, Chinese immigrants began settling in East Honolulu to work on sugarcane plantations. The construction of the Pali Highway in 1898 opened up the region to further development.

During the early 1900s, wealthy businessmen started building retreat homes and estates in East Honolulu, attracted by the area's scenic views and proximity to Honolulu. The neighborhood of Hawaiʻi Kai was developed in the 1960s and grew into a thriving planned community.
