History of Valdosta

Valdosta was incorporated on December 7, 1860. The city got its name from the Valdosta Plantation that was established in the area in the 1850s by a plantation owner named William Troupe. Valdosta comes from the words "vale of dusters", referring to the clouds of dust kicked up by travelers on the unpaved roads of the time.

During the early years, Valdosta was a hub for plantation agriculture in Georgia. Cotton was a major crop. The arrival of the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad in 1859 stimulated economic growth in Valdosta, connecting it to markets and ports across the South.
