Georgia, officially the State of Georgia, is located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered by Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, and the Atlantic Ocean. History of Georgia

The land that is now Georgia was inhabited by Native American tribes like the Cherokee, Creek and Shawnee for thousands of years before European settlement began in the early 1700s. James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia in 1733 as a place for debtors and the persecuted to have a second chance in the New World. Savannah was established as the first city and would serve as the colonial capital. Georgia was one of the 13 original colonies that declared independence from Great Britain in 1776. On January 2, 1788 Georgia became the 4th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. Cotton and tobacco agriculture drove the economy in the Antebellum years leading up to the American Civil War. Georgia seceded from the Union in 1861 and was a major theater of war throughout the conflict. Though devastated by its role in the war, Georgia underwent reconstruction and gradual economic recovery during the late 19th century. It emerged as an important hub of textile manufacturing and railroad transportation. The mid 20th century saw increased prosperity, industrialization and the Civil Rights Movement.
