History of Rome, Georgia [1]

Rome was founded in 1834 along the banks of the Oostanaula River. The city was named after Rome, Italy due to the area's hills and river valleys that reminded the founders of the European city. In the late 1800s, Rome became an important industrial center in the south. The city was home to many mills and factories producing textiles, bricks, and steel. During the Civil War, Rome was a strategic transportation hub for the Confederate army.

In the 20th century, Rome continued to grow as an industrial and commercial center. The city also became known for its education, healthcare, and arts institutions. Some of Rome's most recognizable landmarks were built during this time such as the Clock Tower, City Auditorium, and DeSoto Theatre.
